Sydney Children's Hospital Network-Westmead

Our group includes members of the:

  • paediatric/adolescent oncology unit at Sydney Children's Hospital Network-Westmead;
  • the adolescent/adult oncology unit at Westmead Hospital; and the
  • adolescent/adult Sarcoma Unit at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

The combined resources of these units are able to provide care of all forms of cancer which occur in the AYA population, including leukaemia, brain tumours, sarcomas, lymphoma, melanoma, thyroid cancer and others.

As well as comprehensive chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgical oncology services, our groups offer bone marrow transplantation, survivorship and late effects clinics, fertility support, an adolescent medical service, palliative care, and comprehensive psychosocial evaluation and support.

The group includes surgical, medical, radiation, adolescent and paediatric oncologists. Youth Cancer NSW staff include:

  • Dr Geoffrey McCowage (Children's Hospital Westmead);
  • Dr Mark Wong (adult Westmead Hospital);
  • Dr Verity Ahern (Children's Hospital Westmead and adult Westmead Hospital);
  • Professor Martin Tattersall (Royal Prince Alfred Hospital);
  • Ms Alison Baker (AYA Clinical Nurse Consultant in Westmead);
  • Ms Kristyn Schilling (AYA Clinical Nurse Consultant within the Sarcoma Unit at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital);
  • Dr Amanda Fernando (AYA Palliative Care physician at Westmead, in the position of Fellow)

Sydney Children's Hospital Network-Westmead
Now called the Sydney Children's Hospital Network-Westmead, our Oncology Unit collaborates with the adult Westmead Hospital in the care of AYA patients with cancer. As Youth Cancer-NSW, our group includes members of the paediatric/adolescent oncology unit at Sydney Children's Hospital Network-Westmead and of the adolescent/adult oncology unit at Westmead Hospital. The combined resources of these units are able to provide tertiary and quaternary level care of all forms of cancer which occur in the AYA population, including leukaemia, brain tumours, sarcomas, lymphoma, melanoma, thyroid cancer and others. Younger AYA patients are treated within the Children's Hospital, while older AYA patients are treated at the adult hospital. As well as comprehensive chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgical oncology services, our groups offer bone marrow transplantation, survivorship and late effects clinics, fertility support, an adolescent medical service, palliative care, and comprehensive psychosocial evaluation and support. Ms Alison Baker is the AYA Clinical Nurse Consultant. Dr Amanda Fernando is the AYA Palliative Care doctor, in the position of Fellow, a position funded by Cancer Institute NSW with CanTeen.

Ronald McDonald House


Ronald McDonald House

The cornerstone program of Ronald McDonald House Charities is the Ronald McDonald House. There are 13 Ronald McDonald Houses in Australia that have been designed to provide affordable accommodation for families of seriously ill children.

Each is based by a major women’s and children’s hospital including three in Queensland, five in NSW, two in Victoria and one each in Tasmania, South Australia and WA. The Houses act as a home away from home and offer families the opportunity to stay together to support their son, daughter, brother or sister.

The thirteen Ronald McDonald Houses are located at the following hospitals:

  • Randwick House, NSW – Sydney Children’s Hospital Randwick
  • Hunter House, NSW – The John Hunter Hospital Newcastle
  • Tamworth House, NSW – Tamworth Base Hospital
  • Mater House, QLD – Mater Children’s Hospital, Brisbane
  • Herston House, QLD – Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital Brisbane
  • Townsville House, QLD – Townsville General Hospital, Townsville
  • Parkville House, VIC – Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne
  • Monash House, VIC – Monash Medical Centre, Clayton
  • Adelaide House, SA – Women’s and Children’s Hospital, Adelaide
  • Perth House, WA – Princess Margaret Hospital for Children, Perth
