Meet the Staff

Dr Elizabeth Hesketh
Paediatric and Adolescent Oncologist


Liz is a Consultant Paediatric Oncologist & Haematologist. She originally trained in the United Kingdom in paediatric and adolescent oncology before moving to Australia in 1997. She has worked as a Consultant since 2001 in both New Zealand and Australia. Liz has been the leader/facilitator for the Hunter & Northern NSW Youth Cancer Service since 2011 and is based in Newcastle. She has made strong links with and regularly visits both Paediatric and Adult Oncology clinics in Tamworth.

Lyndal Moore
Clinical Nurse Consultant


Lyndal has worked for the past 20 years in paediatrics and paediatric oncology at John Hunter Children’s Hospital in Newcastle. She has always enjoyed working with adolescent patients. Lyndal commenced the role of Clinical Nurse Consultant for the Hunter and Northern NSW Youth Cancer Service in late 2011. She completed Post Graduate Certificate in Adolescent and Young Adult Welfare-Oncology Stream through Melbourne University in 2012, which has assisted her in further meeting the needs of young people with a cancer diagnosis. Lyndal is currently completing a Masters of Advanced Practice Nursing at the University of Newcastle. Lyndal works three days per week with the Youth Cancer Service and is responsible for providing cancer related education for patients, families, friends, schools, workplaces and to health professionals caring for young people with cancer.

Julia Drake
Social Worker


Julia is an experienced Social Worker who has worked in a variety of hospital based positions including Oncology, Haematology, Neurology, Maternity, Cardiac and General Medicine for many years. The extensive experience Julia has, allows her to provide effective intervention with clients and their families to provide support emotionally, socially and practically where required. More recently she worked in Medical Oncology at The Calvary Mater Hospital before joining the Hunter and Northern NSW Youth Cancer Service in February 2012. She has always enjoyed working with younger patients and has a special interest in this age group. Julia works part-time with the service and can provide information to assist patients practically and provide emotional support during their treatment.

Karen Matthews
Clinical Psychologist


Karen is an experienced Clinical Psychologist who has worked in a variety of mental health and community health settings, specifically with adolescents and families. She has assisted young people to overcome anxiety, depression, family, relationship and school issues, self-harm and sexual assault. Karen was excited to join the Hunter & Northern NSW Youth Cancer Service in February 2012 and enjoys working with young people and their families facing the challenge of cancer in their lives. Karen works part-time with the service and can provide patients and their families with the psychological tools to help them get through their cancer journey. She can also assist patients with pre-existing mental health issues manage their symptoms.
